Saskatchewan Duck Hunting

Saskatchewan Duck Hunting

You'll hunt mallards, northern pintail, green-winged teal, and American wigeon over decoys in stubble fields and on roost water. Big Bend guides scout every afternoon for the next morning's hunt, so you're set up where the birds want to be. A spinning-wing decoy and a jerk rig get added when the water sits still and birds want movement to commit. Guides run the duck call when finishing requires it. Adam, Reg, and Randy have been guiding these fields for years. They know which sloughs hold birds in early October, when the late mallards push through, and how to read a feed field by the second pass.

Goose Hunting Saskatchewan

Goose Hunting Saskatchewan

Snow geese, Canada geese, and Ross's geese all funnel through our area each fall. Spreads go big when the conservation order is on. Cold fronts move birds. Wind direction sets the spread. You'll hunt over full-body decoys, windsock spreads for snows, and motion decoys to seal the deal. Big Bend guides handle the goose call, calling cadence, flagging, and shot calling so the volley stays clean.

Waterfowl Hunting Trips

Showing up prepared makes the hunt better. Before you arrive, Big Bend Outfitting sends a prep guide that covers everything you need.

What we walk you through:

  • License and permit requirements (Migratory Game Bird Hunting Permit, Canadian Wildlife Habitat Conservation Stamp, resident license or Saskatchewan non-resident term license)
  • Gear list (layering system, waders, wader belt, waterproof boots, camouflage in a stubble camo pattern, choke tube, non-toxic shot, first-aid kit, hand warmers, headlamp)
  • Navigation (GPS navigation with offline maps for the fields you’re hunting)
  • Shotgun patterning at home so you know your setup before opening morning
  • What to pack, what we provide, what’s optional
  • Travel and arrival logistics

We match the daily plan to migration timing, weather, and hunting pressure. Cold front pushing new birds in? We shift. Feed field stops holding? We move. Safe shooting lanes, ethical hunting, leave no trace. Standard for us.

Waterfowl Hunting FAQ's

Saskatchewan, by most accounts. From the Quill Lakes wetlands to the northern grain belt, the province sits along the Central Flyway. Big Bend Outfitting hunts the grain country up north, where birds arrive fresh and feed hard before pushing south.

You’ll need three things:

  • A Canadian Migratory Game Bird Hunting Permit (issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada)
  • A Canadian Wildlife Habitat Conservation Stamp (required alongside the permit)
  • A resident license or Saskatchewan non-resident term license, depending on where you’re coming from

Big Bend Outfitting walks you through the process before you arrive. Nothing slows a hunt down like sorting paperwork on day one.

Absolutely! At Big Bend Outfitting, we welcome your hunting companions. Just let us know beforehand so we can make the necessary arrangements for your dog.

We have a partnership with Nature’s Food Bank, a local non-profit that works with outfitters to distribute harvested wild game to people in need. Hunters and guides share the work of cleaning and packaging harvested birds, which are picked up by Nature’s Food Bank every week.

Saskatchewan has strict regulations to protect its wildlife. Non-toxic bird shot is required for hunting waterfowl, and daily bag limits must be observed. Big Bend Outfitting ensures all hunts comply with provincial and federal regulations, and we provide guidance to ensure you are following the rules while enjoying your hunt to the fullest.

Only non-toxic pellets, such as steel or bismuth, are allowed for waterfowl hunting in Saskatchewan. Lead shot is prohibited to protect the environment and wildlife. At Big Bend Outfitting, we ensure you’re prepared and outfitted with the correct ammunition, adhering to all regulations for a safe and responsible hunt. We can provide shotgun ammunition for purchase at the lodge, on request, if you prefer not to bring your own.

The basics you should know:

  • Non-toxic shot only (steel shot, bismuth shot, or tungsten shot)
  • Daily bag limit and possession limit apply per species
  • Zone regulations vary by area
  • Posted land needs private land permission

Big Bend Outfitting secures all private land permission ourselves. Landowner etiquette matters in farm country, and our long-standing relationships with the landowners are part of why we put hunters on productive fields year after year.

Full rules come from the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment and Environment and Climate Change Canada. The Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation also publishes useful guides for hunters new to the province.
